Malachite is a soft, green gemstone that is a "gemmy" copper ore. It is
usually found as a
"happy accident" near copper mines. Too pretty to crush and extract copper from, it has been
used for thousands of years to make malachite jewelry, carvings, beads and cabochons.
Malachite is found in the western United States, Australia, Russia and Africa.
Malachite is generally a combination of green colors in beautiful banded patterns.
Malachite has been
traditionally believed to reduce stress and tension
and enhance balance. As with many other green gemstones, it is
also used by some people who believe it will make them more prosperous
and attract money. Many business people and gamblers traditionally
carry a piece of malachite or wear malachite jewelry.
The malachite gemstone is a
very soft material which should
not be cleaned with commercial jewelry cleaning compounds.
It is a porous gem which may absorb liquids that can affect its color and erode the stone.
It should not be worn while washing dishes or using harsh household cleaning chemicals.
Ultrasonic or steam cleaning
is not recommended. Malachite is a soft material that
could be broken in an ultrasonic machine; and steam cleaning is just too hot for it.
A rouge polishing cloth is okay for cleaning. Malachite
usually clean up easily when rubbed with a soft cloth.
