The iolite gemstone is a transparent blue colored stone. This is a very popular gemstone used for creating jewelry.Medium grades with good color but less clarity are usually made into beads. Better stones are faceted for gemstones; stones that are slightly lower in quality are made into cabochons. Lower grade iolite may be crushed to produce stone for inlay.
Iolite is a form of cordierite. It is pleochroic, which means that it appears dark blue when viewed from one direction and when turned, it can appear yellowish grey to almost colorless.
Iolite is also popularly known as "water sapphire." The strong blue color fading to the almost clear secondary color when rotated gives it this name.
As a result, it has been used as a sapphire substitute. It isn't as hard as a sapphire and so it isn't as durable. It is very pretty, but it also doesn't have the sparkle of a sapphire. Still, it is a nice gemstone in its own right.
This stone looks very good when faceted, and beautiful rings, pendants and stud earrings are often made featuring the iolite gemstone.
People have traditionally believed that iolite has influence over many traits and personal characteristics such as leadership ability, confidence in self, and inner strength.
Iolite Care Tips
Iolite bead jewelry can be cleaned with mild soap or dishwashing detergent and warm water. For caked on dirt, a soft, used toothbrush can be a good cleaning tool. Gold or silver jewelry set with faceted or cabochon cut iolite gems is easily maintained with commercially available jewelry cleaning solutions and a rouge jewelry polishing cloth. Iolite shouldn't be cleaned with steam or in an ultrasonic machine.
