Diamond - the Birthstone for April Diamond is the crystal form of carbon. It is a very hard gemstone, harder than most metals. It has amazing optical properties that can be maximized by cutting. The Round Brilliant cut takes full advantage of these properties. Ideal Cut diamonds will always be the exact same proportions. Diamonds are most often white, transparent, sparkling gemstones. But diamonds can be many colors - a vivid golden yellow, a rich blue or a sparkling green. Popular colors include cognac diamonds, chocolate diamonds and black diamonds. Red diamonds are the most rare of all. Because of their high cost, there are many diamond substitutes. None of them match the look of diamonds, but some do come close. The most affordable diamond substitute is CZ, or cubic zirconia. This synthetic jewel does have a very nice sparkle and its color is the closest to diamond. For more money there is Moissanite, a very beautiful stone that is also man-made. Moissanite is best set in yellow gold; it has the sparkle, but is slightly yellow compared to a good quality diamond.
